IBM 4694 POS REGISTER
Kandy,
I found this information on the IBM 4694...
http://www.scansource.com/ibm/files/469 ... ibm%204694'
It does not state if it has any disk drives, internet connection or network. Therefore I have no way of knowing how it would be possible to load my software into the machine even if the register could use my software.
The list of ports available include serial ports but not a parallel printer port. In general my software will not work with serial printers. Is the printer that came with your unit a serial port printer?
The list of software that comes with the 4694 does include Windows depending on the model, did your unit come with Windows as it will be needed to work with my software?
In general it does not look good to get my software to work with your 4694. However the page linked above does list other software that will work.

older 4694's and DHpos
I may be able to help could you please list the spects of that register and answer a few questions.
Model # 044, 144, 244????
Does it contain a Hard Drive? If so please list the folders on it.
Does it have DOS on it or is is pre configured with IBM's 4690 ?
Will this be the only register\computer on the network?
Does the 4694 have a monitor as well as the customer display?
Does the Customer display have a UOO7 message on it??
Does it have a standard ps2 keyboard or just a retail keyboard on it?
Does it have a cash drawer??
If you put DHPOS on it the display will not work as it can only be used with certain IBM retail applications. You will need a regular keyboard plugged into the ps2 slot. The retail Keyboard won't funtion with DHPOS. The printer won't work either. DHPOS is a wonderful program and I suggest using it on a regular PC and not a 4694.
4694's are in a class of their own and are alot harder to maintain. I have a feeling that the model you have is an older one a 044 or 144. In order to be able to use all the 4694 features you would need to obtain the Retail Application from IBM. As I said before if you go that route plan on spending days and days configuring the system as it's not easy. Then again if you don't plan on printing slips and want a very basic register get a copy of DOS load it on the 4694 and then load DHPOS on it.
Hope this helps!!
Cheers,
Tina

Aha
Hi there,
I have an IBM 4694-X07 base unit in the house. The 4694 could run the IBM EPOS 4680/90 operating system (connecting to a server) or DOS/Windows.
Mine has the following specification:
VIA C3 550Mhz processor
128MB SDRAM memory
20Gb hard disk
VIA motherboard with built in video (uses main RAM)
It is basically a PC, with special RS-485 connectors for IBM perpherals. Mine is a narrow format one which alas does'nt have a Parallel port
It WILL run windows and DH-POS. I put a PIII 850 processor in and I had Windows 2000 running fine.
Now I remember seeing those IBM units on Ebay with preloaded software, the only problem is that you will need DOS drivers for some of the perpherals, and you won't be able to use most of them with DH-POS as they are serial.
This is the brochure for all of the 4694's - http://www.scansource.com/ibm/files/4694_brochure.pdf
They have a normal 1.44Mb floppy disk drive, so DOS & POS can be loaded manually.

I have the older 4694
Hi
I have the older 4694 and have all the drivers on and working for the pole, Till and printer. I can work them all manually through dos very easily know and just need to patch the program or find some clever software to create a virtual com port for the device drivers.
If anyone knows of any software that will create a virtual port from device driver to com port or lpt port please let me know. My system will not run the later versions of windows and for speed ease and reliablity I would sooner run dos.
For example I need to set
prt1 to Lpt1
cash1 to com1
A2 D1 to com2
I have the drivers to run all the dvices in dos if anyone needs them it's simple enough to do and I can send a directory and config.sys file you can just drop onto the harddrive.
If I can mask these ports I think I've cracked it.
even if I could get dos to recognise the RS485 ports I could use the Mode command to change the ports

Ports in DOS
I see that you've mentioned that you can get the ports working in DOS. Can you give me some details on how you got them working? Did you need to use drivers to recognize teh RS-485, or did DOS magically map them to the LPT and COM ports? I'm working on getting the same thing working, and it sounds like you are close. Any hints would bne appreciated.
