Version 6.27 blank screen problem

Post by Dale Harris » Wed Feb 16, 2005 7:36 pm

There have been a couple of reports of shortly after starting the POS.EXE program version 6.27, that the screen blanks out and the program freezes.

I am starting this thread to bring together all the people having this problem so that we can find it and fix it.

If you are having this problem I would like to try out the program with your parameter settings to find the problem. These settings are contained in your ??????.POS file. (Replace the ?????? with the name you gave your register file.) Would anyone who has this problem please attach your ???????.POS file to an email and send it to daleharris@prodigy.net

Include in the email details about your setup.

What version of Windows are you using?
Are you using POS on a network?
If so, does this problem show up from the local or global folders, or both?
Anytning else you think might be unusual about you setup?

Following I will post several emails I have received on this topic.

Thanks,
Dale

Blank screen

Post by Dale Harris » Wed Feb 16, 2005 7:38 pm

I've been using your POS software for 2 years now - great program! I tried upgrading to 6.27 from 6.26. It would not run on my back computer. I am running windows xp on the back computer. I tried testing it on the sales terminal it seemed to work fine. The program blacks out and appears to freeze after the initial "Cash Register" press any key screen. As soon as you press a key the screen turns gray and is unresponsive.

Blank screen

Post by Dale Harris » Wed Feb 16, 2005 8:07 pm

Dale,

I followed the directions to install the new version. Extracted everything into old directory after making backup. Tried to run POS, got opening screen, pressed key and got grey screen and stop. Tried POSCONFIG and works correctly. Used CONVERT program to convert, after conversion tried 2 to start POS from within CONVERT with same result. I am running WINXP SP2.

I thought that the data files fight be causing the problem. I started POS without any data files, created a minimal register, and after I finished the tax rates I got a grey screen and stop. Also, when I used the CONVERT program, it indicated that the main data file was already converted. I like the new sale screen. I also found the graphic "Screen shot of sale being rung up" on the web site is a gray box with a graphic placeholder and the words "Screen shot of sale being rung up". There is no screen shot showing.

same blank screen problem

I am getting the same blank screen and system hang problem as reported above.

I am running XP home edition, no SP2 installed
I am NOT on a network of any kind
I upgraded from 6.26 which worked fine
I am NOT using pole displays or serial printers or serial cash drawers.

I will also send my .POS file tomorrow after I get back to work and can grab a copy for you.

Problem fixed?

Post by Dale Harris » Thu Feb 17, 2005 5:51 am

I seem to have fixed the blank screen problem.

I say "seem" to because I never found the source of the problem but all of a sudden it went away.

Every once in a while when entering code into QuickBASIC, or saving it, some hidden text gets included that you cannot see that fouls things up. When retyping or moving code around the hidden stuff sometimes vanishes. I think that this is what happened here.

Lots of thanks to the folks who emailed in their ??????.POS files because I would have never found the correct part of the code to mess around with to fix the problem without their files.

So if you are having this problem please download http://keyhut.com/pos627c.zip and let me know if this fixes the problem for you also.

POS blank screen problem fixed? Yeah, sure it is.

Post by Dale Harris » Thu Feb 17, 2005 7:47 pm

Ok, that last attempt at fixing the "blank screen" bug was pretty pathetic. But I spent most of the day working on it and I actually think I found it. At least I did find an actual code problem this time and changed it. The reason that this took so long is that there is no problem when the program is run from the source code, it only shows up after the program file has been compiled. Here is the download link. http://keyhut.com/pos628.zip

To make sure that you are using the correct version this program file will display "Version 6.28" in the lower right of the "CASH REGISTER" title box in the first screen your will see when you start the POS.EXE program file.

Please let me know as soon as possible if this is working for you so I can start sending out 800+ email notices to the registered users.

I have gotten email replies from most of the people who have reported this bug that version 6.28 has fixed the problem. So this time it is really fixed.

I have sent out the 800 emails to the the registered users so now I am done.

Time for bed.
