Reset Transaction numbers after training

We want to reset the transaction numbers to 0 as we have finished our training. Can you please provide guidance as to how this can be implemented.

I can absolutely provide guidance in this endevour but I am afraid that it is not going to be what you are looking for. From the FAQ...

TRANSACTION NUMBERS
One of the main purposes of a POS system is to ensure that all transactions are accounted for. The way that this is done is by giving each transaction a sequential transaction number. Some of many ways to commit register fraud is to close out a register and then reopen it and then "lose" all the transactions from this period, or you can ring up a void or refund and lose those single transactions. Then the only way to know that somthing is amiss is that this would leave a hole in the sequential transaction numbers.

For this reason there is no way on any POS system to be able to reset or change the transaction numbers other than by ringing up another transaction and incrementing the count by one. The only exception to this it that once the transaction counter reaches its maximum (usually 9999) then next transaction will be 0000.

Hi Dale,
Let me explain our situation. We were training our staff with the software on the types of transactions that may arise. We completed a few sample transactions which led the program to increment the transaction number counter. Now that we have finished with the training and ready to put the software to actual use, how do we reset the transaction numbers so that the reporting of sales starts with transaction 001.

I do understand what you want to do, I get this a lot which is why it is in the FAQ file. However there is no way to do it.

If I were to release a method of changing or resetting the transaction numbers even once, from that point forward there would no longer be any way of trusting that the transactions numbers were accurate in the program. And this would apply to all users everywhere. This would then render the program useless. This is why transaction numbers cannot be reset for any POS software, including this one.

The only way to start over is to start over by creating a new register with a new file name.

You can't. You'll need to start a whole new cash register file if you want to do that. As Dale recommends, create one register for training and another for real transactions.

What I always suggest is that you configure your register and take a backup of 3 files - {yourshop}.TBL, {yourshop}.IDX and (yourshop).POS (where {yourshop} is the name of your register).

Then you can play around as much as you want, doing training, trying out different transactions etc. In fact it's to be encouraged.

Then when you have finished, you just delete all of the {yourshop} files from the hard drive and copy back the original 3 files so you're right back at square 1.

Only way to do it. If you didn't take a backup at the beginning you're stymied and will have to configure a clean register again. Do that by deleting all but the 3 files I've mentioned and editing the stock file back to the correct figures. That's not too bad is it.
