Payroll 2.0 - Proposed Scheme of Work

Payroll is about to start receiving a major upgrade.

Here's what's on the board for Payroll 2.0:

MULTIPLE PAYRATES
Up until now, you have only been able to store 1 payrate per employee. In Payroll 2.0 we hope to increase that to:
- Ordinary rate
- Time + 1/2 (ordinary x 1.5)
- Double time (ordinary x 2.0)

As well as those set rates - there may be 3 customisable rates, which can either be a set figure e.g. $15.45, or they can be a factor to base upon the ordinary rate, e.g. 3.0 would equate to ordinary x 3.0 (triple time :D)

You will be able to set: the name of each rate (to appear on screen, reports and payslips) and the amount or factor for each rate. These customised rates are unique to each employee.

PAYSLIP RE-DESIGN
As a result of the new rates - the payslips will be split into 3 main sections: Earnings, Deductions, Disbursements. You will also be able to set the method of disbursement for each employee e.g. Direct Credit, Cash, Cheque, Food Stamps :p

DEDUCTIONS
You will be able to setup Global Deductions - these will likely be 10 amounts which can be entered manually during Pay Employees. However, it is not known at this stage if any deductions will be automatic, as this would be a complicated item to program.

If automatic deductions were to be programmed - how would they work? How would they be calculated for each employee etc? Remember- they may not necessarily make the final cut, I want to retain some of my hair :P.

INTERNATIONAL CURRENCY
Payroll currently defaults to the dollars ($) symbol, in 2.0 you will set a custom symbol for your currency.

Other Info:
- files will be updated to a new format
- files will NOT be backward compatible with previous versions
- Alpha/Beta test copies will be available (before the end of February)

If you have any comments or questions - please post them here because work will be starting on this fairly soon.

Thanks, I hope you will all enjoy this upgrade when it is released. :)

So that we do not have to enter hours worked.
It could come from having a roster or thru staff logging in at the computer

Can have deductions based on % of pay amount ? with the type of deduction term as user-defined field.

There is currently no 'timeclock' feature and this is a bit of a nuisance to program. Because Payroll is going to be accepting hours for a variety of payrates - importing data for each employee would be a nightmare (for users and myself).

Not every employee would use the same payrates, and the import file would have to be a set format. I think it is just as easier and probably quicker to whip down the list of rates for an employee and enter the number of hours (units).

Mmm, I thought of this, but the thing is - not only would there have to be a setting for if the % is taken from their total pay, or a single rate or from a combination of rates.

I like the idea of this - but again I'm looking at it from a technical point of view and how hard it is going to be to implement. A simple 20% or whatever taken from the total pay is easy, but then you take into account whether it comes from the gross pay or the net pay, a single payrate (gross/net) or multiple payrates (gross/net), it makes me shiver just thinking about it.

So I like this feature and it might make it in, possibly in Payroll 2.01, who knows - maybe some stroke of genious will hit and it will end up in Payroll 2.0 ;)

Thanks for your suggestions - keep them rolling in...

Progress on the interface is steady but we are having some difficulty with the programming software - which I am endeavouring to remedy with the assistance of Jon Simpson.

Screenshots shortly hopefully. An end of March release is still the guideline but I have other things going on in life (as we all do), in particular I have to move by the end of march so that is at the forefront of my priorities.
