Starting Transaction Number

Is it possible to set the starting transaction number to a user defined value? I'm trying to use DHPOS in India, where it is a Govt. has a requirement that the transaction number continuity be maintained while switching from a manual to a computerized receipt printing system. So I would need to start with a transaction number like 8354 instead of 0001.

Since I do not know of any cash register or cash register software in which the user can change the transaction number (other than be ringing up a transaction) I do not understand how your government can require this since it should be impossible.

If you can change the transaction number once to start the register for the first time then you can change it any time and that would make transaction numbers useless.

The Govt. wishes to see unique transaction numbers. So if the user has already issued manual receipts from 0001 to 8353, after switching over to DHPOS, if another 0001 receipt is printed, there is a duplicate transaction number, which is what the Govt. doesn't like. Hence the need to start DHPOS with transaction number 8354.

I gather from your reply that this is not possible. Maybe the only workaround is to make 8353 dummy transactions before the first real one?

Well the govenrment is going to see duplicate transaction numbers no matter what you do because after 9999 transactions they will reset to 0000 and you will start over anyway.

I guess that it would not be obvious to the average government functionary that the receipts are totally different and are therefore being created by a different/new register hence the need to restart the transaction numbers.

But you are correct, the transaction numbers cannot be set to a specific number except by ringing up thousands of dummy transactions. Or real transactions. You could ring up 8353 real transactions for hundreds of thousand of real dollars (ruppies?) and just not tell the government that they ever happened. This is a better idea from the government's standpoint than restarting with a new register from zero? Sometimes I think that the average tax buddy uses mushrooms for brains. I could be wrong.

The easiest way to ring up 8353 dummy transactions is to ring up that number of "No Sales" or another option is to just hold off using the new register until you ring up another 1647 transactions on your old register.

Didn't you make it so it now has a 6-digit transaction number?

The program uses 4 digit stock numbers as the default but you can choose to use 6 digit stock numbers as a option.

However it is a pretty safe assumption that the cash register that Narasimha is currently using has 4 digit stock numbers.
