printer problem

Post by pekay » Sun Dec 05, 2004 8:30 am

Hi Dale,

I like you POS software. Very easy to use. I have input all the data and it's ready for use, except the printer part.
I hooked up an epson TMU-210D serial printer to this software. So far I have spent about 6-8 hours trying to congfigure and getting it to print but to no avail. I have installed the driver which came with the epson. I tried printing thru Aprint. Nothing happens. Need Help.

Thanks
pekay

Serial printers.

Post by Dale Harris » Sun Dec 05, 2004 9:28 am

pekay,

As it says in various parts of the user's guide and many parts of this site "If you try to use a serial printer with this POS software your life will be a living hell!!!" I may have paraprased here a bit but as you can see this is correct.

This is especially true if your computer runs Windows 2000 or Windows XP.

I have no idea why, when I tell people that sticking needles in to their eyes will be pointless and painfull, that they still go out and buy needles anyway. I am assuming that you already had the serial printer.

Hopefully Alan will wander by soon and may have some ideas. Otherwise if you can exchange the serial printer for the parallel version you will find that that printer will work the first time you try it and to get it to stop working you will have to beat it to death with a brick.

printer problem

Post by pekay » Sun Dec 05, 2004 2:05 pm

i have been using this serial printer with a casio cash register for the last two years. It would be wise to find a use for it rather than selling it for peanuts. Morover I wish to connect two printers with this software, one for the cash counter and one for the kitchen. I might need some help for that too, but later. I can buy a parallel as the second one. First i need to get this working before thinking about further investment.

Kitchen printer

Post by Dale Harris » Sun Dec 05, 2004 2:51 pm

pekay,

The POS program can send output to only one port at a time so it will not be able to drive two printers unless you connect them to the same port. Jonathon Simpson is working on a "Kitchen" program that will drive a second printer but it will be network deal that will require a second computer and a network.

Although now that I think about it a kitchen program that runs on the same computer and sends its output to a selectable printer port so that you do not use the same port as the one used by the POS program might be a good idea.

Dale,

I was hoping I would get some help from you for setting up a serial printer with DHPOS. You had mentioned that Alan would be able to provide some help.

Serial printer

Post by Dale Harris » Tue Dec 07, 2004 3:44 pm

pekay,

Alan works for a POS hardware repair thingie in the U.K. Every once in a while he drops by this forum to offer advice on hardware issues. It is usually really helpful. I have no idea when he will drop by again.

Serial printers & DHPOS

Serial printers are not recommended for use with my POS program. It is <u>sometimes</u> possible to get serial printers to work with DHPOS on a pure DOS computer or under versions of Windows from 3.1 to '98.

Versions of Windows after Win '98 have little to no support for DOS software accessing the serial port. Therefore DHPOS will not be able to print on a serial printer if the computer runs under Windows versions after '98.

However there have been unverified reports of <u>some</u> serial printers under special conditions and by screwing with the Windows setup files that serial printing did work once or twice under Windows XP. I have no details on how it was done (if it actually was done) and I would be real worried about randomly messing with my Windows setup files. Microsoft apparently REALLY does not want anyone to serial print from DOS under XP. And probably they wish that DOS in general would just go away and die.

Ok, so why is there not more support in DHPOS for serial printing? Reason #1 is that I do not have a serial printer. Unfortunatly the "free" aspect of DHPOS cuts both ways, no one has to pay for it and therefore there is no money coming in here to purchase stuff like scanners, cash drawers, scales, pole displays, and serial printers. I survive on the kindness of strangers. Although I do get an occasional donation and in fact a rather large donation was received last week.

#2, While people who own scanners, cash drawers, scales, parallel receipt printers and pole displays have offererd to volunteer to work with me to build support for those devices (I code, they test) not too many people have offered to do the same for serial printers. And the times we have tried it it did not work.

#3, Parallel receipt printers work perfectly with DHPOS and all you have to do is plug it in (and maybe load the "generic" printer driver.) Even when users finally get all the settings for the serial port correct, and the printer begins to work, sometimes there are still glitches like the cutter bar not working or font troubles. But with parallel printers life is sweet indeed.

pekay,

go to your printer properties

sleact the serial port in which you have your printer connected to I.E COM1 or COM2. don't use epson ports they do not work.

this has work for me on some epson printers.

if this does not work i could e-mail you how to change the ports of your printer
